Before mounting brackets, measure your swing to see how far apart the chains will hang.
Mount support brackets so that the chains hang down as straight as possible.


Find the ceiling rafter studs in the area for hanging your porch swing with a stud finder.
Pass under the left side of the ceiling rafter stud several times, making small pencil marks for
a distance of 12" or more. Repeat from the right side, then lightly draw 2 lines in same direction of studs.
Mount either direction, face plates can face one another as shown in top picture. Or, you can add an additional 3" spread by reversing the plates, shown in the bottom picture. Hold a bracket up between the lines, holding a pencil straight draw small circles through the mounting holes to acquire the hole pattern layout.

Use a small nail to create a starter hole to keep the drill bit from walking. Drill ( 5 ) 5/32" holes 2" deep as straight as possible, looking from both directions for each hole. Drill the center holes 3" deep for the longest lag screw.
Hook one end of the spring through the bottom hole in the bracket, hook any chain link through the other
end of the spring to adjust your swing seating height.

Chains hang straight, this is correct mounting
but chains can hang 6" spread out at the top
on each side of the swing. No more than 6"

Chains hang about 24" spread out at the top.
Wrong, weight force is on the swing arms or hardware
running through the swing's small pieces of wood frame.
